Sullivan Management & Consulting Group at ASCRS 2026
SMCG President and CEO Justin Sullivan will be attending the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., April 10th through 12th, 2026. The ASCRS meeting runs alongside the ASOA (American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators) Annual Meeting at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, bringing together anterior segment surgeons, practice administrators, and ophthalmic industry leaders.
The Shifting Economics of Ophthalmology in 2026
Ophthalmology groups are facing a set of operational pressures that look different from even two or three years ago. Cataract volume continues to climb with an aging patient population, but reimbursement per procedure has not kept pace. Practices that built their financial models around high surgical throughput are finding that volume alone no longer guarantees margin stability.

At the same time, the business side of ophthalmology has grown more demanding. Premium IOL adoption introduces patient financing workflows and counselor staffing that most practices were not originally built to support. Retina drug reimbursement keeps shifting as biosimilar entries change payer behavior. And credentialing backlogs can quietly stall revenue when new providers join a group or existing contracts lapse without follow-through.
These are not problems that resolve themselves with better billing software or a new EHR. They sit at the intersection of clinical operations, revenue cycle execution, and administrative infrastructure, which is exactly where SMCG's work with ophthalmology practices is focused.
Starting with a Practice Assessment
A growing number of ophthalmology practices are reaching out to SMCG with the same underlying challenge. They can see that something in their operations or revenue cycle is not performing the way it should, but they lack a framework for identifying exactly where the breakdown is occurring and what to prioritize first.
SMCG's practice assessment is built for that moment. It provides an objective, structured review of the practice as a business, covering operational workflows, revenue cycle performance, staffing models, and financial exposure. The goal is not to produce a report that sits on a shelf. It is to give practice leadership the clarity they need to make informed decisions about what comes next.
In several recent engagements, the assessment itself was the starting point that led into broader successes in revenue cycle management, credentialing, operational consulting, or MSO advisory support, each driven by what the findings uncovered rather than a predetermined scope.
